The Importance of Type Selection in Logo Design
What mark do you look for when shopping for shoes? Adidas, Nike, Reebok? Are you always looking at a product's professional logo design whenever you’re out shopping for any accessories or items? Do you subconsciously tend to equate signs and symbols to certain things like national flags, food brands, or cars?
A logo design is apparently what most of us tend to remember when we think of famous organization names or particular brand names. Logos are visual or diagrammatic illustrations of companies and organizations. Sometimes they are even used to represent individuals. A logo essentially consists of obscure and elaborate symbols and shapes that contain lively colors.
When selecting a custom logo design for your business or company, it is very important that you select a logo type very carefully. Since that logo is going to represent your business and niche, you will need to make sure that it delivers the right message. It will need to be a logo that carries the image of your company, products, and services. It is going to do the job of establishing a lifelong and recallable impression on your target audience. It will serve as the key promotional element for your business, especially because it’s going to be an addition to your advertising techniques such as billboards, flyers, posters, tags or streamers.
In addition, your logo will be the core of your company’s identity, which makes it all the more important that you make your logo selection very carefully. It has to be something legible and bold. It has to define your business completely. Since it is going to represent your ownership, it will therefore need to have a logo that relates to your products and services and maintains your brand consistency.
Logos are usually categorized into two basic design types – custom logo design or professional logo design. A custom design represents small companies or organizations, while a professional one represents larger companies and organizations. They can be created with distinctively animated graphic symbol or patterned designs. Both these categories consist of different types of logo designs as well. However, there are three basic design types. These include:
- Symbolic or Ionic Design
- Combination Marks
- Wordmark or Logotype Design
The Symbolic or Ionic logo design is more eye-catching and explicit. It usually has an independent and simple image with no other complicated patterns. Symbolic or Ionic designs are designed in a way to be memorable they are designed such that people can recognize them without naming the precise products and services they are related to. Sometimes, they can also be picture oriented.
Combination Marks consist of both text and pictures. They are more like animated crests that carry both texts and pictures that complement each other to describe the purpose of a company or business.
A Wordmark or Logotype Design carries the name of the business or company. The most important things to consider in this design are the font and color selection. Since the logo contains a text or word (brand name), the custom logo design can be conceptualized in a unique way.
